Funamushi/Sea Slater: Cockroach of the Beach

Ligia Exotica. Photo courtesy of Ellen.

JARED: This is a funamushi (sea slater). It lives by the sea. It walks like a gokiburi (cockroach), and it's really fast! They don't like the light, either. They usually hang out in a big group. I like them, but they're gross! I rate this 3 insect legs out of 6.

EVERETT: It's a funamushi, but it looks a little bit like a gejigeji (house centipede, click here for picture) or gokiburi. When there's a lot of them together, they look like they're arguing. I don't like them because they're yucky!

so that`s what they are! I saw hundreds of them at the beach last summer. I don`t like the way that they run around in big groups. very creepy!

Great site, boys. You helped me identify funamushi (and gave me a name for them) after I visited Japan and wondered what they were. Thanks!
